Mortgage Lab launches AI training community for mortgage advisers

Published on

A new online community has been launched to help UK mortgage advisers use artificial intelligence in their businesses while addressing the compliance and regulatory considerations associated with the technology.

Mortgage Lab, founded by industry figures Liz Syms and Paul Brett, provides free access to practical guidance, training and resources designed specifically for the mortgage advice market.

The initiative has secured five founding commercial partners, with Curvestone AI and JammJar acting as headline partners, supported by Keychain, Roma Finance and Instamo.

The launch follows a sharp increase in AI adoption across the financial advice sector. Intelliflo’s 2026 UK Advice Efficiency Survey found that 74% of advice professionals were using AI, compared with 43% a year earlier.

Much of this activity centres on administrative functions, including note-taking, transcription and report writing. However, Mortgage Lab argues that advisers need more industry-specific support to understand how AI can be incorporated into regulated advice processes without compromising client information or regulatory obligations.

The platform offers a weekly Friday Briefing, a daily AI news feed, podcasts and a library of practical guides and videos.

Its founding partners will contribute educational material through webinars, training sessions, articles and podcasts, drawing on their experience of developing and implementing technology within the mortgage market.

FOCUS ON PRACTICAL APPLICATION

Mortgage Lab was established in 2026 by Syms, chief executive of Connect for Intermediaries, and Brett, director of BTS Consult & Coach. They have been joined by Rebecca Whitney, founder of Advisory 9, and Mike Potts, chief technology officer, to provide additional technical expertise.

Syms said: “Advisers aren’t asking whether to use AI anymore. They’re asking how to use it without putting a client file or a Consumer Duty outcome at risk, and without losing time they don’t have.

“That’s the question Mortgage Lab exists to answer, with straight, practical guidance from people who work in this industry every day. Having two headline partners and three more sponsors on board from day one tells us the industry wants this too.”

Brett added: “I’ve spent nearly 40 years in this market and I’ve rarely seen a change move this quickly. Adoption among advisers has jumped in a single year.

“Our partners are joining the conversation with advisers, sharing what they’re learning on the podcast and in our sessions. That’s exactly the kind of practical, honest content the community is asking for.”

INDUSTRY PARTNERSHIPS

The involvement of technology providers and specialist finance businesses is intended to give advisers access to examples of how AI is being used across different parts of the mortgage industry.

Dawid Kotur, chief executive of Curvestone AI, said: “Advisers are adopting AI faster than almost anyone expected, and they want to do it properly. Mortgage Lab gives them practical, trusted guidance from people who understand the advice process.

“We’re pleased to support it as a founding headline partner, bringing our technical and AI expertise to help advisers adopt AI with the right compliance and oversight in place.”

Karl Griffin, chief executive of JammJar, added: “Mortgage Lab gives brokers practical guidance on using AI in their day-to-day work, with the chance to learn from people who really understand the mortgage market.

“We’re supporting it as a founding headline partner because we want to share what we’re learning at JammJar and help more firms cut admin, spend more time with clients and grow without the same increase in costs.”
