Vernon Building Society has appointed former Nottingham Building Society finance chief Anthony Murphy as an independent non-executive director.
Murphy joined the Vernon’s board in September and is due to become chair of its audit committee from January 2027, subject to regulatory approval.
He succeeds Jenny Quirke, who will leave the board at the end of this year after completing the maximum nine-year term of service.
FINANCIAL SERVICES EXPERIENCE
Murphy has more than 25 years’ experience in financial services, including senior strategy positions at Lloyds Banking Group, United Arab Bank and Tandem Bank.
Between March 2023 and May 2026, he was chief financial officer and executive director at Nottingham Building Society, where his work included supporting the mutual’s growth strategy, establishing its partnership with Gen H and launching its first public residential mortgage-backed securitisation programme.
A chartered management accountant, Murphy is also chair of the University of Nottingham’s audit and risk committee and has previously served on the board of Bournemouth University.
Darren Ditchburn, chief executive at Vernon Building Society, said: “Anthony is a fantastic addition to the board, and he joins at a crucial time for the Society.
“We have ambitious plans to grow, both digitally and physically, while continuing to enhance our savings and mortgage propositions and strengthen the support we provide to our members and broker partners.
“It’s important that we have the right experience and expertise on the board to help manage that growth responsibly and make the most of the opportunities ahead.
“Anthony’s experience across banking, fintech and the mutual sector will bring valuable insight as we continue to modernise while staying true to what makes the Vernon different.”
Murphy said: “I’m delighted to have joined Vernon as an independent non-executive director. Having worked across different parts of financial services, my experience in the mutual sector has been one of the most interesting and enjoyable parts of my career.
“I’m particularly attracted to the Society’s mutual purpose and its role in helping people on their home ownership journey, while providing a safe and secure place for people to save. I’m looking forward to contributing to that purpose and helping to ensure we continue to deliver positive outcomes for our members, colleagues and communities.”
QUIRKE TO LEAVE BOARD
Commenting on Quirke’s departure, Ditchburn said: “Jenny has made an outstanding contribution to the Society over the last nine years.
“Her experience, leadership and support have helped guide and challenge the executive team, ensuring we continue to make the right decisions for our members and remain focused on delivering our long-term strategy.
“On behalf of colleagues, members and fellow directors, I’d like to thank Jenny for her commitment, insight and contribution to the Vernon, and wish her every success for the future.”
