Teachers Building Society recorded its highest-ever level of mortgage completions in August as the mutual pointed to changes in lending criteria and affordability as drivers of growth.
The Society said August 2026 was its busiest month on record for helping members complete on home purchases.
It attributed the milestone to stronger lending criteria, improved affordability and demand for specialist lending expertise, particularly among borrowers who do not fit mainstream lending models.

Teachers also highlighted the role of manual underwriting in helping brokers place cases requiring a more individual assessment of a borrower’s circumstances.
David Leek (main picture), chief commercial officer at Teachers Building Society, said: “Record completions demonstrate the impact of stronger lending criteria, improved affordability and specialist expertise, giving brokers greater choice for clients who sit outside the standard lending model.
“This milestone highlights the vital role smaller building societies play in providing flexible, tailored borrowing solutions. Our specialist expertise and manual underwriting approach continue to resonate with brokers who value a more personal service and the ability to find solutions where others may not.”
