As mortgage firms gear up for England’s 1am World Cup clash against Mexico on Monday, some lucky employees are being given the day off or later starts so they can stay up to watch the match.
This morning, Mortgage Soup revealed that TMG founder and chief executive Scott Thorpe is giving staff an extra day’s holiday following the early-hours kick-off.
Now, MT Finance has also confirmed it will allow employees to start work at 11am on Monday, giving staff the chance to watch the match without having to report to the office first thing.
Joshua Elash, founding director at MT Finance Group, said the decision was an easy one.
Elash told the BBC: “It wasn’t a dilemma at all. This is as close to a no-brainer as a business can get.”
Under normal circumstances, all 125 employees would be in the office at 08:45 or 09:00 on Monday morning, but he added: “that certainly won’t be the case this Monday.
“I and some other senior managers will be staying up to watch the game and I fancy a lie-in, so it’s only fair to extend that to the rest of the team.
“I think it’s good for morale, and it will be worth it even if Monday isn’t a particularly productive day overall.
“Some things are more important than a day’s revenue”
Elash (pictured right, alongside deputy chief executive Gareth Lewis), were also lucky enough to fly out to the watch England play Croatia in their opening World Cup match.
TMG’s Thorpe has also told employees not to worry about making it into work first thing Monday morning – describing it as one of those occasions that should be experienced without watching the clock.
TMG’s offices will remain closed on Monday morning, giving employees the chance to watch the match with family and friends before enjoying a lie-in.
“Some things are bigger than work.”

Thorpe told Mortgage Soup: “Some things are bigger than work. England don’t play in the World Cup every week and certainly not at one o’clock in the morning.
“I’d rather everyone enjoy the occasion properly than spend the whole game worrying about the alarm clock going off a few hours later. The work will still be there on Tuesday.”
Thorpe said supporting staff extended beyond business performance.
He added: “We work incredibly hard throughout the year and everyone pulls together when the business needs them.
“If we can give people a memorable day with their friends or families and they come back refreshed, that’s a pretty good investment.
“Hopefully England gives everyone another reason to celebrate as well.”
