HSBC admits US mortgage data breach

Published on

HSBC has told the Attorney General in the US state of New Hampshire that some of its residents’ mortgage data has been accidentally made available on the internet.

The records in question belong to current and former mortgage customers of HSBC Finance, which was previously known as Household Finance, which HSBC acquired in 2003. It is in the process of being wound down.

The bank admitted that the data included customers’ names, Social Security numbers, account numbers, old account information and possibly some telephone numbers.

In the statement to the Attorney General’s office, HSBC said: “We are conducting a thorough review of the potentially affected records and have implemented additional security measures designed to prevent a recurrence of such an incident.

“We have ensured that the information is no longer accessible publicly. The company has notified law enforcement and the credit reporting agencies of the incident.”
