H&R BS delivering financial education sessions to schools

Published on

Primary and secondary school pupils across Leicestershire & Warwickshire have received lessons in financial education run by Hinckley & Rugby Building Society, as part of its community focused initiative.

Staff from the Society’s branches visited Nuneaton-based Hartshill Academy and St Thomas Moore Sixth Form, and Leicestershire-based Ullesthorpe Primary School to deliver the sessions, which covered topics such as the importance of saving, budgeting, tax rates and National Insurance.

Gavin Collins, head of RE & PSHE at Hartshill Academy, said: “We were really pleased to welcome the team from Hinckley & Rugby Building Society. The workshops supported the school’s PSHE finance curriculum well, and to have people who work in finance delivering the sessions was a real bonus. The pupils enjoyed the sessions immensely.”

Demi Hughes, assistant office manager at the Society’s Broughton Astley branch, who took part in some of the sessions, added: “I am really enjoying the work we’ve been doing in schools. The sessions are very interactive – it’s been great to see all the students getting involved and enjoying learning about financial education. Some of the 16–17-year-old students already have part time jobs but didn’t know how to read their payslip or work out their take home pay – it’s really rewarding to know that we are helping them with something so important.”

The Society is keen to continue sharing knowledge with local young people. If a school in the mutual’s area would be interested to speak to the Society about providing financial education sessions, please visit hrbs.co.uk/contact and complete a community support form.
