HM Land Registry outlines support after PM Law closure

Published on

HM Land Registry has set out the action it is taking to support home buyers, sellers and conveyancers following the sudden closure of PM Law on 2 February 2026.

The conveyancing firm ceased trading without warning, leaving a number of property transactions and registration applications potentially affected.

HM Land Registry said it recognises the “unusual and unfortunate circumstances” many customers now face and is working to identify all applications lodged by PM Law Group and its affiliates.

Once identified, applications are being reviewed to establish their current status. For cases where there are no outstanding queries, HM Land Registry said it will aim to progress and complete registrations where possible.

DIRECT CONTACT

In situations where further information is required, or where customers do not appear to have appointed new legal representation, the agency will write directly to affected clients, provided it holds their contact details.

Normally, correspondence would be sent to the acting conveyancer. However, HM Land Registry cautioned that due to the limited and variable nature of contact details supplied by PM Law, it may not be able to reach every customer directly.

Anyone impacted appoint a new solicitor as soon as possible.

Land Registry officials have strongly recommended that anyone impacted appoint a new solicitor as soon as possible to help progress their application, noting that land registration rules can be complex.

Those seeking new representation are advised to use the The Law Society “Find a Solicitor” service to locate firms offering conveyancing services in their area.

RESTRICTED ACCESS

Where applications were submitted through HM Land Registry’s online portal, any documents uploaded by PM Law can only be accessed by HM Land Registry itself. They cannot be accessed by the appointed intervention agent, Gordons LLP, or any other representative.

If registration has already been completed, final documents will be sent directly to customers where contact details are available. If not, they will be passed to Gordons LLP to forward on.

Further information for clients, employees and creditors is available from the Solicitors Regulation Authority, which has also provided guidance on how affected consumers can apply to reclaim money held by the intervened firm.
