Cumberland’s new chief exec sets out vision for next phase of growth

The Cumberland Building Society has appointed Stuart Miller as chief executive, as the mutual prepares for its next phase of development.

Miller (pictured) succeeds Des Moore, who will step down at the end of March after eight years leading the organisation through a period of transformation.

The incoming chief executive brings more than 38 years of experience in financial services and is expected to focus on strengthening the society’s community presence while continuing to deliver value for members.

The Cumberland said Miller will oversee further modernisation of the society’s operations while maintaining its people-focused culture.

The appointment comes as the mutual embarks on what it describes as its largest ever digital transformation programme. The investment is intended to modernise its core technology platforms and give customers greater flexibility in how they manage their finances, while retaining the personal service associated with its branch network.

Since taking up the role, Miller has begun visiting every branch across the organisation to meet colleagues, customers and stakeholders as part of an effort to better understand their priorities.

Miller said: “Joining The Cumberland has felt like a natural step in my career. It’s an organisation built around people and purpose, with a culture that genuinely puts members at the heart of every decision.

“We have a real opportunity to combine that human approach with an ambitious technology journey that will support sustainable growth and deliver lasting benefits for our members and the community.”

Moore will remain with the organisation until the end of March to support the leadership transition.

The society said Miller intends to build on the organisation’s existing foundations over the coming decade, with a continued emphasis on supporting members and maintaining collaborative partnerships.

VALUES-LED APPROACH RECOGNISED

The society recently became the first building society in the North to achieve B Corp certification, recognising its approach to ethical business practices, social impact and transparency.

It has also received a three-star ‘world class’ Best Companies accreditation for workplace culture and secured its sixth consecutive Feefo Platinum Trusted Service Award.

Miller added: “These achievements reflect a strong values-driven culture. They’re not just awards – they are evidence of colleagues’ commitment to doing the right thing for members and communities.

“I’m proud to be joining at such an important moment and look forward to building on this foundation.”
