Wayne Smethurst, managing director of APAC Systems is preparing to cycle 100 miles together with Simon Thompson from Capital Advances to raise money for international development charity VSO.
The Ride London event takes place on Sunday 10 August. The riders start off at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park heading through the City of London and along the River Thames before crossing Hampton Court Bridge – the route made famous by both the road race and time-trial events during the London 2012 Olympic Games. Cyclists then head towards the Surrey countryside up to the world famous zigzags of Box Hill before coming back to London finishing off on The Mall.
Smethurst said: “I have been training very hard for the big day averaging 100 miles per week. So far this week I have explored the edges of Snowdonia National Park and Harlech. I have really enjoyed this challenge. It has given me a great excuse to get fit, drop a few pounds in the process and raise money for a fantastic cause, VSO.”
Thompson added: “When Wayne asked if I’d like to take part in Ride London I jumped at the chance. I am not a regular rider so cycling 100 miles is way outside of my comfort zone, but if I can make a difference to other peoples lives then it is well worth it.”
VSO volunteers work at the heart of communities in Africa and Asia to develop health and education resources, build employment opportunities, and get local people’s views heard.
VSO UK director Angela Salt said: “The fundraising efforts of supporters like Wayne and Simon are critical to VSO’s work in some of the world’s poorest communities. The money they raise will help our volunteer doctors, nurses, teachers and midwives to share their skills overseas, securing a legacy that will last long after their placements end.
“I hope as many people as possible will get behind their fundraising efforts. VSO will certainly be celebrating their achievements.”
The pair is hoping to raise at least £1000 over the coming weeks. This would fund a team of VSO volunteers – GP, paediatrician and midwife – for a whole year in one hospital.
