The Vernon named employer of the year at Stockport Business Awards

Vernon Building Society has been recognised as Employer of the Year at the Stockport Business Awards, marking the centenary year of the mutual with a high-profile accolade for workplace culture and community impact.

The Stockport-based building society, founded in 1924, last won the award in 2022. Judges commended the Vernon for transforming its workplace culture, achieving record levels of employee engagement, and demonstrating how staff are aligned with the organisation’s values and strategy.

Chief executive Darren Ditchburn said: “I’m absolutely delighted to win Employer of the Year at the Stockport Business Awards. Vernon Building Society has been proudly supporting our lovely communities for over 100 years.

“Our organisation is built on our people – their dedication and talent drive our success.”

TRANSFORMATION AND GROWTH

The Society’s award entry highlighted its evolution from a traditional financial services employer to a modern, values-led organisation that prioritises staff wellbeing. Average employee tenure now stands at 7.67 years, with more than two-fifths of staff staying for over five years.

The business has expanded its workforce from 86 employees in 2022 to 99 this year, with plans to increase headcount to 107 by 2027 as it grows its branch network across Greater Manchester and Cheshire.

FINANCIAL AND COMMUNITY IMPACT

The recognition comes as the Vernon celebrates record results. Total assets have surpassed £500m, profit before tax has reached £3.5m, and mortgage lending has risen by 17% to £89.6m.

The Society has also extended its reach into the community. In 2024, employees contributed more than 560 hours of volunteering through paid leave, while the Vernon Charitable Foundation, launched this year, awarded over £64,000 to local charities.

“Its Community Stars programme has distributed £12,000 to grassroots organisations.

Meanwhile, a financial education initiative delivered in partnership with WiseUp reached 1,456 students in eight local schools, with staff actively involved in delivery.

Ditchburn added: “Our strong values and inclusive culture have made the Vernon a great place to work. We’re proud to grow not just financially, but as an employer where people feel empowered, supported and valued every day.”
