The Cumberland names Stuart Miller as next chief executive

The Cumberland Building Society has appointed Stuart Miller as its next chief executive, subject to regulatory approval.

Miller (pictured) will join from Newcastle Building Society, where he is currently chief commercial officer, and will succeed Des Moore in 2026 following eight years of what the mutual described as “impactful leadership and transformation.”

With more than 38 years’ experience in financial services, Miller said he intends to carry a “people first” ethos into the next chapter of The Cumberland’s 175-year history.

As Cumbria’s largest financial institution, the society operates 31 branches across Cumbria, Northumberland, Lancashire and south-west Scotland. It continues to emphasise its local and community-focused role, supporting financial wellbeing and maintaining access to in-person banking.

LOCAL BANKING ADVOCATE

Miller, who has worked on projects such as The Future of Rural Retail and the government’s High Street Task Force, has been a prominent advocate for protecting local banking access in underserved areas.

“The high street matters, because it’s where communities connect,” he said. “When a branch closes in a rural area it’s not just a financial service that disappears, it’s part of the social fabric.”

Under outgoing chief executive Des Moore, The Cumberland has invested in refurbishing several branches, including those in English Street, Rosehill, Egremont and Preston, reflecting its commitment to customers who prefer face-to-face service.

“I’m honoured to step into this role and am grateful for the opportunity to work alongside Des during this transition,” Miller said.

“His leadership has shaped The Cumberland’s success, and I look forward to building on that strong foundation as we move forward together. The Cumberland will continue to evolve, embrace new technologies, and adapt to modern challenges.

“But at its core, the commitment remains unchanged – human relationships, community trust, and care for members will always be the heartbeat of what we do.”
