Tandem Bank appoints Stephen Jones as chair in board shake-up

Published on

Tandem Bank has announced a series of board changes, including the appointment of Stephen Jones as chair, as it looks to support the next phase of its growth strategy.

Jones (pictured) will take on the role having built a long career in the UK banking sector. He is currently executive chair of investment banking at Panmure Liberum and has previously held senior executive positions at Santander and Barclays. He also served as the inaugural chief executive of UK Finance.

He succeeds Paul Pester, who steps down after three years as chair. During that time, Pester oversaw the integration of Tandem and Oplo and supported changes to the bank’s leadership team, including the appointment of chief executive Neil Chandler in 2025.

The bank has also appointed Clive Kornitzer as an independent non-executive director. Kornitzer has more than 30 years of commercial experience, including more than 20 years at board level.

His previous roles include senior positions at Santander and One Savings Bank. Most recently, he served as group chief operating officer at OSB Group.

Kornitzer replaces Matthew Donaldson, who is stepping down after nearly four years on the board. During his tenure, Donaldson contributed experience across consumer finance, digital strategy and business growth.

The appointments come as Tandem continues to strengthen its leadership structure following a number of recent senior hires.

Stephen Jones said: “Tandem has built a robust, profitable business with a clear purpose and an exciting future.

“I’m delighted to be joining as Chair and look forward to working with Neil, the Board and the wider organisation as Tandem embarks on its next chapter.”

Neil Chandler said: “I’m delighted we’re announcing a strong series of appointments to Tandem’s Board, underlining the exciting future that lies ahead for the business.

“Stephen and Clive add significant depth to an already strong Board. Their insight, perspective and judgement from the top of the industry will be invaluable, and I’m thrilled to welcome them both to Tandem.

“I’d like to give a special thanks to both Paul and Matthew for their contributions to Tandem.

“They step down at a positive point for the business and we’re grateful for their insight during their time on the Board.

“With a talented leadership team and an experienced Board driving strategy at the helm, Tandem is set to accelerate into its next chapter of growth in 2026.”

The changes follow a number of recent leadership appointments at the bank. Chandler joined as chief executive in June 2025, while Ryan Heaps was promoted to chief financial officer in November 2025. Russell Strevens joined the leadership team as chief technology officer in December 2025.
