Majority want a second opinion

New research from Bright Grey has found 63% of people would take a second medical opinion if it was offered, when receiving a diagnosis from a medical professional.

It also found that 25% of UK adults have wanted a second medical opinion at some point, yet many (66%) have never been offered one.

49% of those surveyed by YouGov (2,093 UK adults) believe a second medical opinion should always be offered when someone receives a diagnosis from a medical professional; and when asked about location and timing, 85% said they would prefer it to be face-to-face and 49% would like it to be provided by a UK based professional.

The findings follow Bright Grey’s announcement last month that its Helping Hand service has been extended to include a second medical opinion. Unlike similar UK providers’ services, Helping Hand’s second opinion is available face-to-face (within the UK) and customers can request one without making a claim.

Debbie Kennedy, head of protection proposition for Royal London Group’s Intermediary Division, said: “This research not only highlights the value customers place on receiving a second medical opinion; it also reiterates how important it is for customers to have a personal conversation with a medical professional.

“Helping Hand’s second medical opinion option sets it apart from other UK providers because we’re offering face-to-face consultations and, as with all the services available through Helping Hand, it can be used any time – not just at the point of making a claim.”
