Leeds staff improve outdoor facilities for local children

Published on

The Leeds Building Society’s internal audit team volunteered with Hyde Park Source to reclaim derelict land at Chapeltown Community Nursery.

The cleared area will become a garden for children to use, where they’ll be taught about nature and growing their own food.

Activities for the 15 colleagues included cutting back weeds and clearing rubbish to create an area for raised beds and fruit bushes.

“We enjoyed being able to spend time together supporting a local charity,” said Katie Hall from internal audit.

“We also raised £205 by selling eggs laid by rescued ex-battery hens. These funds were used to buy materials for the garden such as ground covers and timber to create the raised beds.”

The internal audit team took advantage of the mutual’s volunteering scheme, which allows all Society employees a day’s paid leave each year to help in the community.

Ray Gordon, project worker at Hyde Park Source, said: “The team worked really hard and achieved a lot in a short space of time. The folks from the nursery were amazed how much we had done.”
