Nearly 90% would repeat home condition survey experience

Published on

88% of consumers who used a home condition survey said they would do so again, according to research conducted by Countrywide Surveying Services (CSS) and Pegasus Insight.

Meanwhile, 92% of respondents reported that their survey gave them peace of mind.

The research also found that 60% of home condition surveys uncovered previously unknown property issues, a key factor in helping buyers to avoid unexpected costs and post purchase complications.

To address industry concerns that detailed surveys might delay transactions or trigger renegotiations, the data tells a different story. Only 9% of buyers received a valuation below the agreed purchase price, and just 2% decided not to proceed with their purchase after the survey.

CSS says that rather than hindering sales, home condition surveys provide buyers with greater confidence in their investment, ultimately supporting a stable and informed property market.

In addition, the research highlights a significant knowledge gap among first-time buyers, with 73% lacking confidence in navigating their property purchase.

Matthew Cumber, managing director at Countrywide Surveying Services, said: “This research reinforces the immense value of home condition surveys in the homebuying journey. With 88% of buyers saying they would use a survey again and 92% finding peace of mind in the process, it’s evident that these assessments are essential for making more assured and substantiated decisions.

“Beyond identifying hidden property issues, home condition surveys provide buyers with confidence while supporting a more transparent and stable property market. Dispelling concerns about transaction delays, the data shows that home condition surveys are a tool for reassurance, not disruption.

“Helping clients understand the distinction between a lender’s valuation and a home condition survey is key to preventing costly mistakes, building trust, and delivering positive customer outcomes. By proactively recommending and explaining the importance of home condition surveys, brokers can strengthen their advisory role and offer a more transparent, client-centric service. This approach benefits all stakeholders in the homebuying process, ensuring buyers receive the support, upfront information, and expert guidance needed to navigate an increasingly complex and fast-moving property market.”
