Mortgage Business Expo (MBE) has announced that Rob Elder from the Bank of England and William Hobbs, chief investment officer at Barclays UK Wealth Management, will be the keynote speakers at MBE London.

Elder will be opening the event and looking at the economic outlook for the UK with Hobbs addressing what the economic outlook means for the housing and mortgage sector at midday.

Elder joined the Bank of England in 1998, and for 12 years supported the Monetary Policy Committee as an economist and then senior manager. Between 2010 and 2012 he represented the UK on the board of the International Monetary Fund in Washington DC and most recently, supported the BoE Financial Policy Committee by running a team monitoring development in the UK banking sector. Between 1990 and 1998 Elder worked as an economist and forecaster at HM Treasury.

Hobbs joined Barclays in October 2005, working in the equity research team, covering the global consumer sector. He then moved into the Investment Strategy team running global equity strategy for the EMEA division. After four years as head of investment strategy, he was made chief investment officer for Barclays Investment Solutions in January 2019. Hobbs is a fellow of the Securities Institute and has close to 20 years’ experience in the financial sector.

MBE London will once again take place at the Business Design Centre, the London venue for MBE, on 12 October 2023 which also includes the FIBA Specialist Property Finance Club seminars and exhibition sections.

Rob Barnard, director of intermediary relationships, Pepper Money, will deliver his opening remarks and the seminar programme will begin at 10.15am.

This will be followed by a joint MBE and FIBA session covering a General Market Overview.

This will be followed by the MBE seminars:

  • How to sell more Protection and General Insurance
  • Is this the end of property investing – what options are there for landlords in today’s marketplace
  • L&G and OMS Tech Talk
  • Equity release panel debate

FIBA will also be running their separate seminar sessions:

  • Why Specialist Property Finance is important to holistic mortgage advice
  • Consumer Duty – The Role of the Specialist Broker
  • Where has commercial term gone

In addition, there will be marketing sessions hosted by:

  • Google Digital Garage
  • Mortgage Marketing Forum

Mike Mikunda (pictured) from MBE said: “With the ongoing volatility in the UK economy continuing to affect the housing and mortgage/finance sectors, we are delighted to confirm both Rob and Will as keynote speakers, who will give some perspective and insight during these challenging times.

“Once again, we have a wide range of exhibitors to engage with and panel sessions to attend with visitors also earning CPD hours toward the CII/Personal Finance Society member CPD scheme.”
